Arne Slot says he doesn’t enjoy watching Premier League games.
The Liverpool boss believes that the top-flight is lacking entertainment because a narrow gap in quality between those at the top and bottom of the table means that set-pieces are becoming increasingly important.
Slot said: “Most of the games I see in the Premier League are not for me a joy to watch, but it’s always interesting because it’s so competitive and that is what makes this league great – because there’s so much competitiveness.
“Everyone can win against everyone, but just as someone who loves to watch football, without being interested in who’s winning or losing it, just to be enjoyed, I think there’s a big difference now between three or four years ago in the Premier League.”
The Dutch coach continued: “Teams have become so much stronger – three or four years ago, when the top clubs faced the No 18, 17, 16, 15 [in the table], it could have been a four or five goals difference, and that’s usually what you like. If there’s so much difference between the teams, then one team is really good, but that’s not the situation any more. It’s not only about the set-pieces, it’s also because so many teams have become very strong. But we’re not going to change.”
Meanwhile, Slot hopes forward Cody Gakpo can kick on after netting his first league goals in eight games during the 5-2 victory over West Ham at the weekend.
He said: “I don’t judge them only on the goals they score, I judge them on different things as well.
“But for our attackers, I know how they think and what they want, and that is scoring goals.
“I was happy because I think it was the 4-1, so that gave us even a more comfortable cushion. But even more happy for him to score, because I think he needed that goal.”
