Kasper Schmeichel wishes he’d been able to say a proper goodbye to fans.
The 39-year-old goalkeeper announced his retirement in May after suffering a shoulder injury and he is still upset he didn’t get the chance to decide for himself when his playing days were over.
He told FourFourTwo magazine: “I’m just trying to get used to it. It’s strange because it’s been out of my control.
“The surgeon said my shoulder wasn’t going to be fixed to play at the level I wanted to play at. The decision was taken for me.
“It’s definitely not how I wanted it, my career’s finished but I’ve had some time to reflect. I’ve been lucky enough to experience a lot of things, play over 900 games, be part of the teams I’ve been part of, win the trophies I have…
“Every footballer dreams that he’ll bow out on the pitch. That’s what I would have liked – to be able to say thank you, to show my appreciation for the support and love I received through the years.”
The former Leicester City and Celtic sticksman is keen for his future to be within the game in some way and even dreams of running his own club.
Asked his future plans, he said: “The honest answer is, for the first time in my life, I don’t actually know.
“That can be really scary and also really exciting.
“I flip between things. Football will, without question, be at the heart of it.
“I’m going to try a lot of things.
“I’m starting a director of football course.
“I wouldn’t rule [management] out at all. I love being out there. I’ve really enjoyed some of the coaching and punditry.
“I’d love to run a club. I’d love to own a club, but that’s going to be difficult.”
