Bernardo Silva is leaving Manchester City to help the next generation.
The 31-year-old midfielder has spent nine years at this year’s Premier League runners-up but he’ll be stepping away at the end of the season with his current deal comes to an end.
Asked why was the right time, he told CityTV: “It’s a mix of things, in terms of trophies, in terms of what I personally achieved here, it’s never enough, but I feel that we won a lot, our generation.
“It’s time for these young guys to have their moment, and for me personally, it’s an opportunity to go a bit closer to my family.”
The Portuguese star, who joined City from Monaco in 2017, has won six Premier League titles, a Champions League, and several FA and Carabao Cups during his tenure.
Silva noted he’s keen to be closer to his family, while the chance to embrace a “new challenge” is also part of his motivation to leave.
He added: “It’s been quite a long time, 12 years, that I’ve been apart, and quite far away, and I want to be a bit closer to them.
“Also, I want a new challenge, even though I love the football club, and I loved the nine years here, I feel it’s the right moment for me to have a new challenge in my life, and it’s going to be good.”
Silva will be available on a free transfer this summer, with Sky Sports News previously reporting that Barcelona and Juventus are keen on signing the City captain.
Although a source says his dream is to play for Barca, it’s understood that Atletico Madrid are also in the running for his signature.
Meanwhile, moves to Saudi Arabia or to Major League Soccer (MLS) in the US are also options.
