David Haye has urged Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury to fight each other.

The former world heavyweight champion feels that the time is right for the blockbuster British bout to take place and thinks that both fighters “need each other” for the sake of their career legacies.

Haye told Sky Sports: “That’s the biggest fight they could both possibly have. They should be pushing it, they should be pressing it, they have to be.

“They both need each other, for their own legacies, different reasons. They both need to say Anthony Joshua was in the same era as Tyson Fury, vice versa, and they battled it out to figure out who won.”

Haye is aware that both Joshua and Fury are past their peak when it comes to boxing but says that a scrap between the pair still holds considerable commercial appeal.

The former boxer said: “They didn’t fight each other in their prime but we got to see it in the end. Just like (Floyd) Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao didn’t fight in their prime [but at their] commercial peak. Maybe this is their commercial peak.

“Maybe they will earn more money now than they would have done when it was first talked about.”

Fury made a winning return to the ring when he beat Arslanbek Makhmudov earlier this month and Haye thinks the Russian was ideal preparation for a bout against Joshua.

He said: “A nice stepping stone to the big one, which is Anthony Joshua.

“You look at it from Tyson Fury’s point of view, he’s selected an opponent the same dimensions as Anthony Joshua, someone big and strong and isn’t too slick in terms of head movement, who has vertical arm defence similar to AJ.

“He believes what he still has left and what he believes he has is more than enough to beat Anthony Joshua. And that’s a massive fight that the fans want to see.”
