Deontay Wilder plans to fight for another decade as the former world champion sets his sights on a heavyweight title clash with Oleksandr Usyk.
The Bronze Bomber, 40, has been sparingly active in recent years but has insisted renewed motivation and improving talks over a 2026 bout with The Cat, 38, have reignited his career.
Speaking to BoxingScene, Wilder said: “I’ve got like 10 years left, baby, I’m only 40 years young, man.
“See, that’s the thing about age. People don’t understand, and they’ve got to get it together.
“Of course, age can define you and the factors of your ability to move, being active, and different things like that or whatever. But that’s only if you allow it to.
“Because if you’re active, no matter what age you are, you’re going to still be able to move.”
The former WBC heavyweight champion – who turned professional in 2008 – dismissed suggestions that his financial security should push him towards retirement.
He said: “That can be factors [to retire] as well, but right now, I’m good to go. It’s a good feeling to know that you don’t never have to come back now. That means I’ve done my job well.”
Wilder reiterated that boxing was never his childhood ambition, explaining that he entered the sport to support his daughter Naieya, who was born with spina bifida.
He said: “This wasn’t my dream. I didn’t know nothing about boxing. I only got in because of my daughter … I’ve done what I’ve done. So there’s still more work to do, and I’ve got a lot of life left.”
Despite questions over his recent form, Wilder insisted he is in a better place physically and mentally than during his struggles following defeat and inactivity.
He said: “People want that old one back, but I’ve got something better for you. 40 is a beautiful age. I feel great. I’m very active. Age is nothing but a number.”
Wilder has previously spoken openly about personal trauma and working with a sports psychologist after what he described as dark periods away from the ring.
Reflecting on that time, he said: “Mentally, that’s what runs everything. If you ain’t mentally there, it’s done … I’m back though. I’m nice now. I can breathe.”
Momentum has grown after Usyk publicly named Wilder as a potential opponent, with negotiations described as “very promising”.
Wilder previously said: “Just the excitement that it has drawn for boxing fans has been amazing… my heart is pumping right now just to get back in there.”
As part of his route back, Wilder has floated Derek Chisora, 41, as a possible warm-up fight.
He said to ESNews: “Derek Chisora, you want it, you can get it. That might be my warm-up fight.”
However, with Usyk firmly in his sights, Wilder believes the opportunity has refocused him.
He said: “My life has been crazy, but to still be here, still happy, and to get this opportunity – it’s a blessing.”
