Arne Slot has “no clue” whether Mohamed Salah will play for Liverpool again after the forward accused the club of throwing him “under the bus”.
The 33-year-old foward was left out of The Reds’ Champions League squad to face Inter Milan on Tuesday (09.12.25), deepening uncertainty around his future just days after his explosive public outburst following Liverpool’s 3-3 draw with Leeds United.
Now, manager Slot has admitted he has no idea what Salah’s future at Liverpool looks like.
Speaking to reporters upon arriving in Italy, he said: “I have no clue, I cannot answer this question at this moment in time.”
Salah, Liverpool’s third-highest goalscorer, admitted on Saturday (06.12.25) he “couldn’t believe” he had been left on the bench for the full 90 minutes in the match – his third consecutive omission from the starting XI.
Despite being pictured training at Kirkby on Monday (08.12.25), the Premier League champions chose not to take him to Milan, a decision Slot insisted was unrelated to a breakdown in their relationship.
The Liverpool manager said the situation had surprised him.
He said: “That’s not the way I feel. But he has the right to feel how he feels things. I haven’t felt that at all until Saturday evening.
“When I didn’t play him anymore, usually players don’t like the manager that much. But he was very respectful to my staff members, to his team-mates, and he trained really hard, so to an extent it was a surprise for me when I heard after the game that he gave the comments he gave.”
Slot confirmed Salah had been informed he would not travel with the squad, but stressed dialogue had always taken place before Saturday’s events.
He said: “Of course, before Saturday the two of us have spoken a lot. Sometimes longer, sometimes shorter. I’m a firm believer that there is always a return for a player.”
Salah’s post-match interview – a rarity for the forward – laid bare his frustration.
He said: “The third time on the bench, I think for the first time in my career. I’m very, very disappointed.
“I have done so much for this club down the years… now I’m sitting on the bench and I don’t know why. It seems like the club has thrown me under the bus.”
He added that unfulfilled “promises” from the summer had fuelled his dissatisfaction and questioned whether “someone doesn’t want me in the club”.
