Xabi Alonso has called for calm heads at Real Madrid following the team’s third successive La Liga draw.
Los Blancos drew 1-1 with Girona on Sunday (30.11.25) to fall a point behind rivals Barcelona at the top of the table but the coach has stressed that it is a “very long season” after frustrating recent results.
Alonso said: “In the second half we improved, we had more chances. We weren’t clinical, to get the three points. But it’s a very long season, and we have to keep going.”
Disappointing results in November have led to some questions about Alonso’s project at Real Madrid but the manager insists that there are “different phases” that teams have to go through during a campaign.
He said: “There are different phases in a season. At the start [of the season], we were more consistent away from home.
“The team was enthusiastic to come back at 1-0 down [at Girona]. We had three or four quite clear chances to score the second goal and win.”
Alonso stated that he had “no criticism” for his players amid Real’s run of draws.
He said: “I liked the reaction [to going behind]. It wasn’t enough, but we were close. We have to remain united, with the necessary self-criticism, wanting to win with so many games away from home. We have a chance on Wednesday (03.12.25) in Bilbao [against Athletic Club] and we’ll see.”
However, the coach felt that his team needed to play more “good football” against Girona.
The former Los Blancos midfielder said: “We needed to play more minutes of good football: attacking football and being dominant. We did that much more in the second half and that’s what we want. Why we didn’t do it is something we need to analyse so that we can try to do it from the start. Or even if we do it in the first half, we need to keep it up in the second.”
